Second Assignment Post, Sphere Completed.

In my first post I said my first project would be to make a single colored sphere. Well, I finished it, though I wasn't as close to being done with it as I thought.

On the first try, I did it in halves. The problem with this is that the middle part that I sewed together wasn't as flexible as the rest of the sphere, so it turned out more oval-ish than circle-ish. Hopefully I can find my SD card converter and post up a picture of it.

To solve this problem, I cast on 30 stitches, then rand a piece of yarn through the stitches I had on the needle without removing the stitches from the needle, and before I cast off my yarn, I did the same thing. Basically, by the end I had a string hanging from each of the four corners of my 30 by 18 rectangle (this is the number of stitches when using 10mm needles). When I had the yarn off of the needle, I tied together the 2 top strings and pulled tight and did the same with the bottom. Then I stuffed it and sewed it shut.

It still has some issues, but with this I think I can move on to my next project. I will making a Voltorb Plushie now. It doesn't seem like a big step up, since it's still just a sphere, but now I have to worry about the "skin", basically what colors go where, and this time I'm going on a bigger scale, 100 by 60. I don't know how long this is going to take, but I will make sure I have some way to put up pictures.

EDIT: Found my converter, so now I can put up pictures :D

Bottom view, and the biggest problem I'm having with my spheres. Hopefully it will be fixed.

Side view, not too bad if I do say so myself.

Top view, working on making it a little better.

Blogging assignment, beginning

This blog is the start of an assignment for my ATEC 2320 class. I am supposed to start a theme for my blogs, and since I am interested in designing 3D characters, I want to have something with that. However, I have very little experience with 3D designing programs, so I decided I'd try to relate it to something I know how to do. I couldn't think of anything, but as my luck usually is, i found inspiration while looking around for something completely unrelated to my assignment.

An interesting fact about me is that I am the only male that I know who currently knits. I was searching online for ideas on what to make next, when I came across this blog here. I liked how these were made with only yarn and stuffing, but I don't know how to crochet. So instead, I am going to try to figure out how to make these guys and more through my knitting.

For my first experiment, I a trying to make a simple, single color sphere. It sounds easy, but I have already failed twice. I am on my third attempt. This related to 3D design because I am using this to learn proportions, and I am technically making 3D models, just without the aid of a computer. I am almost done with my sphere, and I hope to find a way to upload a picture from my phone to my computer, I just have to find my SD card converter.

As I go, I am going to try more and more different models, and hopefully by the end of this I'll be able to make something more than simple shapes.
